I'm Clive Richards. I started cutting trees in October 1981 — just outside Cranleigh, where I still live and work today.

Forty-five years on, the work hasn't changed much. Sharp tools. Patient cuts. Respect for the tree. Respect for the property. Don't take a branch you don't need to. Leave the site better than you found it.

What's changed is the kit and the regulation. I'm fully NPTC qualified, £5m public liability insured, Environment Agency waste carrier licensed, and a Checkatrade approved trader with 835 reviews. I work with a small crew of three or four — same faces, same standards.

The work

I cover Surrey and West Sussex, from Guildford and Redhill in the north down to Worthing and Shoreham in the south. I know the estates, the conservation areas, and which council will say yes to what.

I work on everything from a single overgrown hedge to a full estate clearance. Mostly domestic — large gardens, country properties, the kind of homeowner who wants the work done properly first time. Some commercial, some developer site clearance, some specialist work alongside ecologists.

What I won't do

I don't do emergency call-outs at midnight. I don't tender for council framework contracts. And I won't top a mature tree just because I've been asked to.
