Hedge Trimming & Shaping

From the annual trim to a complete reshape of an overgrown hedge.

Hedge work covers everything from the regular annual trim to a complete reshape of an overgrown hedge.

We work on all the common species — laurel, leylandii, beech, yew, hornbeam, mixed native, box, privet, holly. Different species need different treatment and timing. Cutting laurel like beech, or yew like privet, gives bad results — or kills the hedge.

What we do

  • Annual or twice-yearly trims
  • Height reductions
  • Full reshape of overgrown hedges
  • Width reductions where hedges have got too wide
  • Removal and replanting where a hedge is past saving
  • Stump clearance after removal

How we approach it

Sharp tools, clean cuts. Trimmings chipped or removed — your choice, included in the price. Tidy site, no green waste left behind. For large or formal hedges we string-line for a perfectly straight cut; for natural and mixed hedges we follow the line of the hedge.

Common questions

When should I get my hedge cut?

Most hedges: late summer (August–September), after nesting season and before winter. Very vigorous hedges like leylandii and laurel often need an earlier cut too.

Can you reduce the height of an overgrown hedge?

Usually yes, but it depends on species. Yew, beech and hornbeam recover well from hard reductions. Conifers like leylandii won't regrow from old brown wood, so there's a limit. I'll tell you what's possible at the site visit.

Do you cut during nesting season?

Generally not, unless we've checked the hedge for nests first. The law protects nesting birds (March to August) and good practice means avoiding work then where possible.
