Stump Grinding

Grinding stumps below ground level after felling, or for a clean slate.

After a tree is felled, the stump is left in the ground. Stump grinding takes that stump out using a machine that grinds it down below ground level, along with the larger surface roots.

We grind to 200mm below ground level as standard, or deeper if you need to plant, lay paving, or build over the spot.

When you'd need it

  • After a fell, for a clean lawn
  • Replanting near the old stump
  • Building, laying paving, or installing a fence
  • Removing a trip hazard
  • Stopping suckering regrowth from species like cherry, lime or sycamore

How we approach it

We bring the grinder to site. The grinding produces a pile of woody mulch that we can leave for you — good for paths, borders, or fill — or take away. The hole left behind can be backfilled with topsoil.

Common questions

Will it leave a hole?

A shallow depression that you can backfill with topsoil, or fill with the leftover mulch.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Better not. Even after grinding, residual material affects new root growth. Plant nearby instead, or wait 2–3 years and replace the soil.

Can you grind every stump?

Almost. Stumps very close to walls or services can be trickier — we'll check at the site visit.
